The Thin Green Line
An environmental investigative newsmagazine created for and hosted by Werbach on the Outdoor Life Network. The show featured environmental activists like Julia Butterfly Hill and covered pressing environmental issues through investigative journalism.
'The Thin Green Line' was the show I wished existed when I was running the Sierra Club: environmental journalism that was actually watchable.
We made it for the Outdoor Life Network as an investigative newsmagazine. The idea was to cover the environment the way a serious news program covers politics — go to where the story is, talk to the people living it, and let the facts carry the weight instead of a narrator scolding the audience.
Julia Butterfly Hill, who had spent more than two years living in a thousand-year-old redwood she called Luna to keep it from being cut down, joined us as a correspondent. Bringing in people who had actually put themselves on the line gave the show a credibility a studio host never could.
